Emily Williams, PT
Emily was born in Iowa, but grew up in Clemmons, NC, where she attended West Forsyth High School. She attended college at UNC-Chapel Hill, where she majored in Exercise and Sport Science and rowed for the varsity crew team. Emily received her Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) from East Carolina University in 2013. She has a clinical background in outpatient, hospital, and skilled nursing settings, but is especially interested in gait analysis and running mechanics, as well as low back pain.
Emily has been a therapist since 2013, but began developing her gait analysis skills at age 16 while working in specialty running shoe stores. She has continued to develop these skills by taking continuing education courses related to running mechanics and injury.
Emily is a lifelong athlete with experience in swimming, soccer, running, ultimate Frisbee, rowing, and cycling. She is an avid runner and has raced every distance from the mile to the marathon (although half-marathons are her current favorite) and has recently begun competing in triathlons. She lives in Pinehurst with her husband and dog and the 3 of them enjoy hiking, traveling, and watching movies.

Professional Experience:St. Joseph of the Pines, Southern Pines, NC. August 2013 - June 2014. Sub-acute rehabilitation. Specialized in working with patients in the early phases of rehabilitation following joint replacement and other orthopedic surgery, stroke, deconditioning, and a wide variety of other conditions.
Duke Sports Medicine, Durham NC. January 2013-March 2013. Clinical internship in outpatient orthopedics focusing on patients following orthopedic surgeries, as well as chronic conditions such as frozen shoulder and IT band syndrome. Participated in seminars on performing functional movement screens to target areas for potential injury in athletes. Trained in both traditional and instrument-assisted manual therapy. Presented in-service on running injuries and foot strike pattern.
Mission Hospitals, Asheville, NC. May 2012-June 2012. Clinical internship in acute care working with patients in all areas of hospital including trauma, renal medicine, and intensive care. Observed surgeries including total knee arthroplasty, anterior and posterior approach hip arthroplasty. Presented in service on recognizing and preventing delirium in a hospital setting.
Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem, NC. October 2011- December 2011. Clinical internship in acute care . Performed evaluation, plan of care, and treatment of patients with neurological conditions including CVA, TBI, Guillan-Barre, and orthopedic conditions such as joint arthoplasties and fracture repaus.
Comprehensive Rehab, Wilson, NC. March 2011-April2011. Clinical internship in private practice outpatient therapy setting. Gained skills in manual therapy and myofascial release techniques. Performed vestibular assessment and treatment. Worked with a variety of pediatric patients including children with torticollis and CP, as well children at School of the Deaf.
Southwind Wellness, Durham, NC. January 2010-May 2010. Worked as physical therapy technician and gym supervisor. Supervised work conditioning patients in carrying out 4-hour long strength and conditioning programs and taught water aerobics classes.
